The vaunted Lightning press struck once again on Tuesday night at the APEX as Lehman forced visiting St. Joseph's College of Long Island into 28 turnovers on its way to the 70-51 victory.
Through five games the Lightning is forcing an average of 27 turnovers per game. And against the Golden Eagles, those turnovers more often than not turned into points during a game that at one point saw the Lightning lead balloon to 63-31 with 12:50 remaining in the game.
"Our transition offense was good," said Coach Eric Harrison following his team's blowout win. "We're using our defense to create offense and when we do that we're in good shape."
The Lightning jumped on St. Joseph's from the outset, building a quick 15-4 lead over the first 5:30 and looked like they would blow the doors off early. But coach Kris Davis' crew put together a 13-7 run, capped by a jumper from Danielle Hamlin, that cut the lead to 22-17 with 10:34 remaining in the half. From that point on the Lightning would combine 11 forced turnovers with eight points from Louvinia Hayes and six from Paula Robinson to head into halftime with a commanding 44-25 lead.
The Golden Eagles showed a never-say-die attitude in the second half despite the big deficit to arrive at the final margin.
Senior Louvinia Hayes led the way for the Lightning, notching a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Taniefa Taylor had a season-high 15 points and also chipped in six rebounds. Amanda De La Cruz had a crooked number in nearly every category, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Lehman returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to the City College of New York to open its CUNYAC schedule.
