When discussing newcomer Louvinia Hayes prior to the season's start, Lehman head coach Eric Harrison confidently stated that she was bringing a scoring ability to the City University of New York Athletic Conference that wasn't often seen on the Division III level.
Just 13 games into the 2010-11 season, Harrison is looking prophetic, and none more so than following Hayes career-high 40-point performance on Friday night in Lehman's 69-55 win over visiting John Jay College.
Her 40 point single game output is the highest in recent memory in Lehman history as not even the Lightning's former standout and 2000-point scorer, Sally Nnamani, eclipsed the plateau during her decorated tenure with the team.
Remarkably Hayes achieved the historic point total despite not scoring her first basket until nearly nine minutes into the ball game, and actually could have recorded an even higher number if not for her relative inefficiency from the field (11-for-28) and free throw line (12-for-19).
Still, Hayes full repertoire was on display, especially in the first half when she poured in 23 points on a variety of long range bombs and drives to the hoop. With the Lehman senior leading the charge, the Lightning built a 42-22 halftime lead.
Similar to the Lightning's victory over Keystone College earlier in the week, Lehman's opponent would make a second half run to get back in the game as John Jay emerged from halftime energized.
Three times the Bloodhounds managed to cut the Lightning lead to five points or less, but each time it seemed the Lightning had an answer. With 7:37 remaining Jessica Lirio, who was outstanding in the loss with 25 points, converted on a layup to pull John Jay to within 57-52 only to have Hayes respond with a three-pointer. From that point on the Lightning pulled away with layups from Taniefa Taylor, Amanda De La Cruz and additional free throws by Hayes.
In the win the Lightning once again used their pressure defense to make things difficult for the opposition, forcing John Jay into 28 turnovers which led to 19 points. Joining Hayes in double figures were De La Cruz (10 points) and Jaleesa Gordon (10 points, 11 rebounds), while Hayes also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
Lehman will now prepare for what could be a potential preview of the CUNYAC Championship tournament as they welcome in Baruch College on Wednesday evening.
Undoubtedly, Louvinia Hayes will be mentioned in the scouting report.
