Hot-shooting Trinity Tigers drop Sewanee in women's basketball action, 82-55

Sewanee and Trinity traded baskets for much of the first half, but the Texas Tigers closed out the final seven minutes of the first stanza with a 24-1 run before taking home an 82-55 victory in women's basketball action Friday. The loss extended host Sewanee's skid to five, dropping the squad to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in SCAC play. With the win, Trinity moves to 5-9 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Sewanee's Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) opened the scoring early in the second half after she nailed a short jumper in the paint to put the hosts ahead 2-0. Trinity's Jana Tucker responded with a basket of her own to even things at 2-2 before the squads each traded one more basket to even it at 4-all. Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne)scored four straight for the Tennessee Tigers, a free throw and a 3-pointer, to give Sewanee an 8-4 lead before Kelsey Daniel knocked down a jumper to make it 8-6 Sewanee.
Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) nailed a trey for the hosts, making it 11-6 Sewanee, and the two teams continued to trade baskets until they found themselves tied at 16-16 with 9:17 left to play in the half. Trinity took their first lead of the contest on a basket by Victoria Perko, going ahead 16-18, before the visiting Tigers managed to open things up.
Kabbes connected on one of two free throws after being fouled by Daniel to make it 17-18 Trinity, but the host Tigers wouldn't score a field goal again until there was just 1:14 left in the half. Trinity used a 24-3 run over the next eight minutes to extend their lead to 20-42 as halftime approached. Kabbes hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in the period to cut the Trinity lead to 19, 23-42, heading into intermission.
The second half looked very similar to the first, as the two teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of the period and Trinity's lead drifted between 21 and 25 points. The Texas Tigers used a 14-0 run over a four minute span to extend their lead to 36, 37-73. Sewanee scored eight straight to cut the difference to 28, 45-73, with just under five minutes left in the contest. The two squads continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the game before Trinity walked away with an 82-55 SCAC victory.
Logan Miller led all scorers with 13 points, while Kabbes added 12and Dee Bradford (Isle of Palms, S.C., First Baptist) chipped in 11. Murphy Burns and Nicolette Halbleib led Trinity with 11 points apiece. Ginsburg grabbed six boards for the host Tigers, but Trinity finished with a 52-25 edge in rebounding. Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) added six points and six assists for Sewanee.
As a team, Sewanee went 19 of 56 from the field, finishing the night with a 33.9% shooting percentage from the field. The Tennessee Tigers, who lead Division III in 3-pointers made per contest, nailed 11 treys in the contest. Trinity, who shot 63% in the second half, went 36 of 64 on the night, finishing with a 56.3% field goal clip.
Sewanee will be back in action Saturday night when they host Southwestern in an SCAC match up. Southwestern is 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the SCAC after a 77-75 loss to Oglethorpe Friday night.
