St. Louis, Mo., January 14, 2011 – Sophomore Kristin Anda scored a career-high 19 points and added six rebounds to lead the No. 10 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team to a 94-55 victory over Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday night in St. Louis, Mo.
Washington U. improves to 10-3, 1-1 in UAA play, while Emory drops to 7-6, 0-2 in league action. The Bears continue conference play at home on Sunday, Jan. 16, against No. 5 ranked University of Rochester. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at the WU Field House.
Senior Kathryn Berger scored in double figures for the seventh-straight game and 11th-time this season with 17 points. Junior Claire Schaeperkoetter scored a season-high 13 points on three three-pointers, while freshman Jordan Rettig added 11.
Despite opening the game hitting just four of their first 15 shots, the Bears held onto a 14-12 lead following a three-point play from Anda. The bucket by Anda was part of a 13-0 run that gave Washington U. its largest lead of the half at 22-12 with 10:55 left. Anda had nine of the Bears' 13 points during the run.
Emory answered back with five-straight points to get lead down to five, but senior Hannah Cusworth found Berger in the corner for a three-pointer to get the lead back to eight. Berger's three ignited an 8-0 run by the Bears as Washington U. extended its advantage back to double figures at 30-17.
Berger led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, while Anda added nine points as Washington U. took a 47-27 advantage to the locker room. The Bears shot 44.7 percent (17-38) from the field in the opening half, and hit 5-of-13 from three-point range. Washington U. had a 32-14 advantage in rebounding in the first 20 minutes, and had a 13-3 advantage in second-chance points.
The Bears scored the first eight points of the second half to extend their lead to 55-27 with 15:08 remaining. Emory was held without a field goal for the first 5:19 of the second half, and was just 12-of-39 (30.8 percent) from the field in the second half.
Washington U. shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the field, and outrebounded Emory, 60-27.
