The University of Redlands women's basketball team coughed up 41 turnovers against a high-pressure Chapman University defense in tonight's non-conference regional showdown, resulting in a difficult 69-77 overtime loss in Currier Gym.
With junior forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and freshman forward Brittany Oster (Agoura Hills, CA) sidelined with different ailments, the Bulldogs stepped up for their teammates with a 53.5% display that saw three players hit doubles figures, including a game-high 19 points from senior forward Allison Clark (Altadena, CA). In addition, junior guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) sat just one assist shy of her first collegiate triple-double.
But the Bulldogs squandered a 10-point lead with less than four minutes to go in the second half as Chapman hit three consecutive baskets from beyond the arc while the Bulldog offense went cold.
Now down by five at 61-66, the Maroon and Gray finally ended its scoring drought when Clark converted back-to-back free throws with 1:18 left in regulation. Redlands continued chipping away at its deficit as Clark stepped up with another basket to make it a one-point game.
But Chapman provided the apparent dagger when senior guard Tara Glennon (Yorba Linda, CA) dropped in a long jumper for the 68-65 lead with 17 seconds left.
After the teams traded timeouts, Redlands set up a three-point play with nine seconds to go. Following the inbounds pass on the far side of the court, Barbetti-Cort rolled around the arc past a screen and nailed the shot to tie it up with one second left.
Unfortunately, this is where the Bulldogs' luck ran out as Chapman controlled the overtime period from the opening play and never looked back.
Barbetti-Cort provided a valiant effort for the Bulldogs with 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. She also racked up three blocks on defense. Clark sincerely stepped up her game with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting while nabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman forward Jesse Luersen (Bend, OR) came off the bench for 12 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) swatted seven blocks to go along with six points, three rebounds and three assists.
For Chapman (14-4), senior guard Christina Ly (San Gabriel, CA) led the Panthers with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. She also garnered 11 steals, wreaking havoc for the Bulldogs. Senior center Brandi Hood (Norwalk, CA) added 15 points and six rebounds for the Panthers.
Redlands (7-5) heads to Caltech on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up against the Beavers.
