FOREST GROVE – A spirited comeback over the final 10 minutes of the second half proved to be too little, too late for Pacific Tuesday night as the Boxers fell to Warner Pacific 57-41 in their final women's basketball non-conference game of the season at the Stoller Center.
The Boxers (5-8) scored just 11 points in the first half and seven points over the first 10 minutes of the second half before hitting stride. Pacific outscored Warner Pacific 24-9 over the final 10 minutes of the game, but got too late of a start on the comeback to challenge for the victory.
Kristen Corrales (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) led the Boxers with seven points while Brittney Anderson (Jr., Missoula, Mont.) and Ashley Jacobs (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) each scored six. The Boxers shot just 23.2 percent for the game, hitting on 13 of 56 from the field. Pacific also went 4 of 22 from three-point ranger and 11 of 15 from the free throw line. Paige Jensen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) finished with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Miranda Holenstein led Warner Pacific (8-9) with 13 points. Cameryn Calhoun added 11 while Katie Smith and Kelsey Mattsen each scored 10. The Knights connected on 29.3 percent from the field (24-61) and out-rebounded the Boxers 51-35.
While the Knights ran the high-low game to perfection throughout the first half, the Boxers could not get anything to fall through the hoop. After a Corrales lay-in opened scoring for the Boxers at the 16:28 mark, Pacific found themselves scoreless over the next nine minutes. The Knights built a 14-point lead, 16-2, on Adrienne Spiering's lay-in with nine minutes left in the half.
Jacobs ended the scoreless drought with her lay-in at the 7:20 mark, but Sarah Smith's (Jr., Kendrick, Idaho) short jumper with 5:48 to go provide to be Pacific's last field goal in the stanza. Warner Pacific continued their tear, opening up a 21-point lead on a three-pointer by Calhoun with 2:13 to go and Holenstein connected on a short jumper with 21 seconds to go to give the Knights a 34-11 halftime lead. The Boxers connected on just 3 of 28 from the field in the half.
The frigid streak continued into the second half, with the Boxers hitting just two shots from the field over the first 10 minutes. Layne Tucker hit a three-pointer to give the Knights their biggest lead of the game, 48-16, with 13:14 to go.
Kaley Adams (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) hit the Boxers second shot at the 13:02 mark, which started a 14-2 run that was the start of the Boxers' energetic comeback. Jacobs canned two free throws at the 5:38 mark to bring the Boxers within 20 points at 50-30. The Knights extended their advantage back to 23 points on a Calhoun three-pointer before Anderson hit a lay-in with 3:12 to start a 9-2 Pacific run that closed out the game.
Pacific returns to conference play for the remainder of the season, beginning with a pair of weekend games at the Stoller Center. The Boxers host Linfield on Friday and Lewis & Clark on Saturday. Tip-off both nights is 6 p.m. Warner Pacific returns to Cascade Conference on Friday as they travel to Northwest (Wash.).
