REDLANDS, Calif. - The CLU women's basketball team had won five straight heading into its conference opener at Redlands on Saturday night. After the Regals built an early 11-point cushion the Bulldogs turned the tables scoring 13 unanswered to take over a lead it would nearly hold until the final buzzer.
Box Score: UR 52, CLU 46 - F
The team defense did its job holding Redlands to its second lowest scoring output of the year. The Bulldogs failed to knock down a field goal attempt until Courtney Carroll scored two of her 11 points with 6:37 left in the first period.
While Cal Lutheran scored on its opening two possessions Redlands committed turnovers on its first three of the game. The Regals were able to build a 13-2 lead midway through the first half.
In a foul heavy opening period the teams combined for 27 fouls including 16 called on Cal Lutheran. Redlands used a 13-for-19 performance at the foul line to mount a comeback and a final first half pair by Carroll gave the home side a 29-27 halftime lead.
UR scored the final four points of the first period and the first nine to open the second period while CLU netted its opening second half points at the 12:45 mark. Those free throws by team leading scorer Starla Wright who finished with 13 points, sparked an 11-0 run pulling the Regals even with nine minutes left.
A couple of missed free throws to continue the scoring run and take over the lead swung the momentum back towards the Bulldogs who scored five straight to pull away for good.
On its five-game win streak Cal Lutheran had been shooting over 41 percent from the field as a team, but on Saturday the Regals connected on just 22 percent of their attempts (14-for-63), their poorest effort this season.
Cal Lutheran (6-6, 0-1 SCIAC) will return home to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10-2, 0-1 SCIAC) on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
