SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The CUA women's basketball team bounced back from a loss on Friday with a convincing 80-63 victory over Susquehanna (7-7, 2-1 LC) on Saturday afternoon to improve the Cardinals record to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark Conference. Jill Woerner posted a double-double with 20 points and 14 boards for CUA, and was joined in double figures by Liz Briones (17) and Jenny McGann (11).
CUA was in control of the game for nearly the entire day, opening up a 17-6 lead less than six minutes in on a three by Jenny McGann. Holly Janicki's layup with 12:39 to play before halftime gave the Cardinals a 17-point advantage, 25-8, while Woerner's bucket at the 8:24 mark put CUA up by 20, 33-13.
The lead never dipped below 15 for the rest of the half and following Woerner's free throw with one second to play, CUA took a 42-25 advantage into halftime.
As the second half moved along the Cardinals maintained a healthy lead, which rose to 21 on Janicki's basket with 15:14 remaining.
From there, the Crusaders momentarily made things interesting as they ran off ten straight points to pull within 52-42 with 11:09 to play, but CUA scored the next five to go back on top by 15.
CUA's largest lead of the afternoon was 24, which came at the 4:48 mark after a free throw by Briones.
The Cardinals handed out 17 assists on 30 field goals for the game and sank 15 of 19 attempts at the free throw line (78.9%). CUA had terrific balance in the scoring column with Emily Grabiak netting seven points and Kerri Confrey, Janicki, Rachel Ferriand Mary McGann all scoring six apiece. Confrey also dished out a team-high seven assists.
Susquehanna was held to 38 percent shooting for the game and forced into 24 turnovers. Three Crusaders hit for double figures, including Samantha Cartwright (15), Erika Barron (12) and Shannon Grunwald (12). Susquehanna handed out 20 assists on 24 field goals but was outscored in the paint 34-12.
The Cardinals stay on the road next weekend when they head to New York on Friday evening for a showdown vs. Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
