Free throws lift Edgewood College over MSOE

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team knew they would be in for a tight game on Saturday when MSOE visited the Todd Wehr Edgedome and the game would most likely come down to free throws. Both teams made the same amount of field goals, however, the Eagles made five more free throws to take the 55-51 victory.

Trailing 47-46 with 5:03 left, freshman Chelsey Watkins connected on her second three-point shot of the game to put the Eagles (7-5, 5-1 NAC) ahead by two points. Shae Beckwith pushed the lead to three with a free throw before MSOE's Carol Cayo made a layup. Watkins then knocked down a pair of free throws and Melanie Walker made a layup to make the Eagle lead 54-49 with just under two minutes to play.

The Raiders (6-7, 3-3 NAC) made a layup before Walker sealed the victory with 20 seconds left when she sank a free throw to push the lead to four. The Eagles made four of their final six free throw attempts over the final four minutes and went 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) in the 55-51 win. Coming into the contest, Edgewood College was shooting only 61.4 percent from the free line this season.

MSOE lead for most of the first half, with the Eagles taking only two leads in the half. Leading 7-6, the Raiders went on 6-0 scoring run to earn their largest lead of the game, seven points.

The teams exchanged baskets before the Eagles went on a run over their own to cut the deficit to one. Danielle Dixon sparked the run before Brittany Bylsma made and layup and Alison Tobin sank a pair of free throws to make the score 15-14.

After the Raiders extended their lead to 22-16, the Eagles made another move, sparked by Watkins who made two free throws and a jump shot before Beckwith tied the game with a jumper of her own. Watkins then drained a three-point basket with 47 seconds left to put the Eagles up 25-20 at halftime.

Watkins set a new career-high with 12 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. She also went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Tobin went 5-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line to lead the Eagles with 14 points and Bylsma was the final Eagle in double figures with 10 points. Walker led the Eagles with eight rebounds while Beckwith handed out a season-high six assists. Edgewood College recorded 17 steals in the win, marking the third time this season the Eagles have recorded at least 17 steals in a game.

Cayo led all scorers with 15 points and Maruerit Wellstein scored 14 points for the Raiders. Cayo also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.

The Eagles will take to the road on Tuesday when they travel to Milwaukee to play Alverno College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
