Baldwin-Wallace Women's Basketball Team Drops First OAC Game, 67-58, to Capital

BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore forward Hilary Kuhns scored a game-high 20 points as the Capital University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 67-58, today (Saturday, January 8, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea. The victory was Capital's fourth in its last five games, while B-W ended a three-game winning streak.

With its win, Capital is now 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the OAC.  In addition to Kuhns, freshman guard Lauren Geroski had 10 points. For B-W, senior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) led the way with 19 points. With her 19 points, Schroeder moved in fifth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,200 career points.

In the first half, there were a pair of ties before B-W jumped out to an 10-4 lead at the 14:56 mark when freshman forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian) made a layup.  The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 10 points at 17-7 at the 12:42 mark when Rohrbach made a pair of foul shots.   The lead grew to 11 points at 21-10 at 10:25 when freshman guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) when she made a layup, was fouled, but missed her free throw.

B-W continued to extend its lead to 14 points at 28-14 at the 6:39 mark when sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) finished a fastbreak by making a layup.  Capital then went on a 10-3 run to close to within seven points at 31-24 at the 1:34 matk when senior guard Tara Harper made two foul shots. Following a five-point Yellow Jacket run, capped by a three-point play by freshman forward Melissa Hoffbauer  (Bloomville/ Buckeye Central) at the 29.7-second mark, Capital's Kuhns scored the final four points of the session, including a jumper that just beat the first half buzzer, to make the score 36-28 in favor of B-W at the intermission.

In the second half, Capital came out on a 9-1 run to tie the game at  37-37 at the 17:14 mark when sophomore forward Stacy Timmerman grabbed a rebound and scored. The Crusaders then gained their first lead of the game at 41-40 when junior forward Selena Hawkins made two foul shots at 16:02. The lead grew to four points at 44-40 at 14:41 when Kuhns canned a trey and to six points at 46-40 at 12:25 when freshman guard Brea Tackett made two foul shots.

Capital continued its assault and its lead reached double figures at 11 points at 51-40 with 10:44 left when Tacket canned a triple. B-W finally ended Capital's 14-point run at the 10:03  mark when Schroeder made one of two foul shots.

B-W climbed back into the fray with a five-point run, all on foul shots, to close to 51-45 at the 8:12 mark when junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) made two foul shots.   The Yellow Jackets kept up the pressure and closed to one point at 54-53 at 4:37 when Spisak made a steal and Schroeder finished the fastbreak with a layup.

Undaunted, Capital turned to its go-to player in Kuhns who scored consecutive baskets, the last at 2:44 to give the Crusaders a five-point lead at 58-53. Following a pair of Spisak foul shots that cut the score to 58-55, Capital made six free throws to build its lead to nine points at 64-55 and end matters.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 12 when they host OAC arch-rival The University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.  In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.

Two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter.
