Cortland Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Jen Polan (Westhampton Beach) made a career-high five three-pointers and tied her career best with 15 points as Cortland defeated visiting Oswego, 64-49, in a SUNYAC matchup. The Red Dragons improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the Lakers are now 5-5 and 2-1.
 
Polan made 5-of-8 shots, all from behind the arc, and scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half to help Cortland pull away from a 27-24 halftime lead. Junior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 14 points and dished out 10 assists, junior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and junior Micki Volpini (Newfield) added 10 points.
 
Junior Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosick Valley) led Oswego with 11 points and three steals. Sophomore Meagan Stover (Lake George) added nine points and senior Colleen McCready (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Oswego led 21-13 on a Stover jumper with 9:52 left in the first half, but Cortland held the Lakers scoreless for more than seven minutes. Junior Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) gave Cortland the lead for good at 23-21 with a layup at the 3:33 mark and completed Cortland's 12-0 run with two foul shots 41 seconds later.
 
The Lakers were still within two at 35-33 on a Jenna Rossi (Phoenix) layup with 12:23 remaining in the contest. Cortland scored the next 11 points, starting with a Polan three-pointer and concluding with a Byrne trey with 8:50 left. The Red Dragons led by at least eight points the rest of the way.
 
Cortland travels to New Paltz, which is 4-0 in SUNYAC play, for a league contest on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.
