Hendrix crashes the boards in 80-75 win over Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas (Jan. 7) -- Hendrix College senior Christina Byler scored 18 points, while juniors Katy Ashley-Pauley and Anna Roane chipped in 14 points apiece to lead the Warriors to an 80-75 win over Southwestern University on Friday afternoon at the Corbin J. Robertson Center.

Hendrix (6-6, 3-1 SCAC) was just four rebounds shy of doubling Southwestern's (10-3, 2-2 SCAC) rebound total, 52-28. The Warriors grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and owned a 25-9 advantage in second-chance points. Hendrix set new team season-high marks in points (80), 3-pointers (11), field goals (26), rebounds (52) and 3-point percentage (.524, 11-21).

The Warriors fell behind early after the Pirates opened the first 6:22 with a 12-2 run. Hendrix answered and narrowed the gap to two points (14-12) over the next 2:18, eventually taking a 17-16 lead on a lay-up from senior Wyvonne Hawkins with 8:55 left in the first half. The lead would change hands briefly with 3:08 to go, however, Hendrix snatched the lead back on its next possession on Roane's second 3-pointer of the half. The Warriors owned a 36-33 advantage at intermission.

Roane knocked down another trey-bomb for the Warriors' first basket out of the break to make it a 39-33 contest. The Pirates snagged their final lead of the game, 40-39, with 16:23 left in regulation after a 7-0 stretch. Byler hit a lay-up and junior Jordan Henderson knocked down a 3-pointer on the Warriors' next two possessions to earn the final lead change. Hendrix eventually led by a game-high nine points, 58-49, with 8:19 to go.

Southwestern would not go away without a fight and pulled to within one point, 66-65, with 3:12 left on the clock, however, Hendrix responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Henderson and Byler to stretch its advantage back to seven points.

Byler was 6-of-15 from the field and 4-of-9 from long range. Roane went 4-of-6 from 3-point land and Ashley-Pauley was 3-of-8 from the field and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Junior Caty Hensy matched her career-high mark of 13 rebounds and junior Samantha Devlin pulled down a new career-best 10 boards. Ashley-Pauley dished out a team-high five assists, while Devlin and Roane tallied four assists apiece.

Hendrix improves to 24-10 all-time against Southwestern. The Warriors now travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Trinity University on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. CT.
