The Oswego State women's basketball team erased a 13-point second half deficit to tie the game with 1:15 remaining in the game, but came up short in the end to St. Lawrence in a 63-55 decision Wednesday night in Oswego. Lauren Nunziato hit a lay-up to knot the score at 55-55, but the Saints scored the final eight points to pull out the victory and improve to 9-1. The Lakers fell to 5-4 on the season.
It was a tight first half until St. Lawrence closed out the last six minutes of the frame on an 8-2 run to take a 38-28 lead into the locker room. The Saints finished the half shooting 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from the field compared to 28.1 percent (9-of-32) for Oswego State.
St. Lawrence opened the second half with a trey by Casey Capello for its largest lead of the game with a score of 41-28. However, the Lakers turned up the intensity on defense, recorded some stops, and began to chip away at the deficit until Nunziato leveled the contest with 1:15 remaining.
The Saints called a timeout on the ensuing possession, which resulted in a Katie Abramski lay-up. St. Lawrence then went on to go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Oswego State was paced by 15 points and nine boards from Kayla Ryan, while Lauren Nunziato contributed 12 points off the bench. Kelly Legg led St. Lawrence with 15 points and seven boards. Casey Capello also added 13 points followed by 10 points from Iris Santoni.
The Lakers will travel to Cortland to face the Red Dragons Saturday at 6 p.m.
