St. Benedict pulls away to avoid upset

Macalester gave No. 17-ranked St. Benedict a good battle before the five-time defending MIAC champs took over in the final minutes to topple the Scots 62-50 at the Leonard Center. On top 49-47 with 6:20 left on the second half clock, the Blazers out-scored Macalester 13-3 the rest of the way to escape with the victory.

Majra Mucic (Sr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) and Holly Schiedermayer (Jr., Waupaca, Wis.) each turned in double-doubles to lead the Scots. Mucic scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, and Schiedermayer added 15 points and a career-best 10 boards for her first career double-double.

Heather Gillund tallied 13 points and blocked four shots to lead St. Ben's. Amy Stifter scored 12 points and Hannah Hylla added 10.

Macalester enjoyed a 17-13 turnover advantage, but could not overcome a 28% shooting figure.

St. Ben's improves to 9-1 overall, 6-1 in the MIAC. Macalester is now 2-8 on the season and 2-5 in MIAC play.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Jan. 8) at Hamline.
