Saint Vincent stymies Geneva

The Saint Vincent women's team used a suffocating defense and a balanced offense to defeat Geneva College 60-30 in the Robert S. Carey Center.

The Bearcats forced 32 Geneva turnovers, and limited the Golden Tornadoes to just a 12-for-35 mark from the floor for the game.

Brittany Sedlock and Melissa Mansur shared team high-scoring honors for the Bearcats, as each tallied 12 points.  Maria Baroffio added nine points and Emily Fenton eight for Saint Vincent, as each of the nine active Bearcats scored at least two points.

Sedlock narrowly missed recording her fifth double-double of the year, as she grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.  Seventeen of Geneva's 32 turnovers came via steal, as Devin McGrath posted a game and career-high eight thefts.

Geneva was led on the scoresheet by Beth DeLuca's eight points, with Leah Prisuta bucketing seven.  Alyse Scarsella led the GT's with seven rebounds.

In a defensive-minded first half, the Bearcats took charge from the start, scoring the game's first six points before eventually opening up a 13-3 advantage on an Ariel Rocco bucket with 12:40 left in the frame.

With 5:43 left in the first, a jumper from Sedlock gave SVC a 22-8 lead, before Geneva responded with five straight points to cut the gap to 24-13.  It was as close as the game would get, however, as Fenton sent SVC into the locker room on a high note, burying a long three with two seconds left in the half that would give the Bearcats a 27-13 halftime lead.

SVC kept the momentum heading into the second half, opening the frame on a 6-0 run before Mansur hit threes on back-to-back possessions that would increase the SVC cushion to 39-15 with just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation.

The advantage would continue to swell for SVC, as the Bearcats enjoyed their first 30-point lead, 54-24, on a Jordan Clinton bucket with 5:02 left.  Two minutes later, a Fenton three followed by a conventional three-point play from Baroffio gave SVC its largest lead of the night, 60-24, and the Bearcats would cruise down the stretch.

The victory was the Bearcats' fifth straight, improving their record to 11-1 on the year.  It was also the 19th win in the past 22 contests for Saint Vincent, stretching back to January of last season, and the team's ninth straight home win.  The loss drops Geneva to an even 6-6 on the year.

Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany College for a 2pm game.
