CHICAGO -- Led by Bryanne Halfhill's career-high 24 points, the University of Chicago women's basketball team closed out non-conference play with a 76-70 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Thursday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.
After trailing for the final 12:44 of the first half, Chicago (8-3) took a 44-43 lead when Meghan Herrick converted a three-point play at the 16:54 mark. Herrick finished with 15 points for her sixth straight double-digit performance.
McKenzie Forseth's three-point shot with 14:03 to go brought the Pioneers (5-7) back to even at 47-47, but the Maroons went ahead for good at the 13:37 mark on a free throw from Karly Kasper.
Chicago built its largest lead of the night, 68-57, when Jenna Lillemoe buried a three-pointer with 3:49 remaining in the contest. Lillemoe connected on three of five attempts from behind the arc and finished the game with 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Mallory Mau's three-point basket at the 1:42 mark brought Platteville to within three, 69-66, but the Maroons outscored the Pioneers 7-4 the rest of the way.
Sparked by 10 points from Liz Lawinger, the Pioneers built a 40-37 edge at the break. Platteville led by as many as seven, 26-19, at the 9:03 mark.
Platteville shot 53% from the field in the first half, but just 32% in the second stanza. Chicago outshot the Pioneers 47% to 44% on the evening.
Taylor Simpson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds as the Maroons held a 38-37 edge on the glass.
Lawinger paced the Pioneers with 13 points, while Mau and Ashley Callahan each tallied 11 points.
Thursday's game marked the first matchup between the two schools.
