Slow Start Dooms Lady Pioneers at Cal Lutheran

MARIETTA, OHIO — There was no "California Love" for the Marietta College women's basketball team as the Pioneers dropped game one of their west coast trip 61-39 to host California Lutheran University Tuesday (Dec. 28) night. [Box Score]

Sophomore Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) scored a team-best 12 points for Marietta (4-6), who could not overcome 30 turnovers and a 31-8 halftime deficit against the Regals (4-5).

Junior Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) came off the bench to add six points, while freshmen Paige Lamb (Marietta/Marietta) and Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) both had five points. In addition, senior Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier) contributed a game-best 13 rebounds and three blocks in the loss.

Overall, the Pioneers shot just 24.5% (12-of-49) while the Regals finished 22-of-67 (32.8%) from the field. Both teams went 4-of-20 (20.0%) from beyond the arc and pulled down 43 rebounds.

Starla Wright paced Cal Lutheran with 14 points and 13 boards, while Chelsey Hastigan added 11 points and four assists and Channing Fleischmann and Maya Stoelo both contributed eights points in the victory.

Marietta will look to bounce back Thursday (Dec. 30) when it visits California Institute of Technology in a tip-off at 10:30 p.m. EST.
