Boxers Fall Victim To Stellar Shooting By Athenas

More news about: Pacific

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pacific found themselves unable to keep up with a torrid shooting pace set by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Monday as the Athenas rolled past the Boxers 91-51 in women's basketball action at Ducey Gymnasium.

The Athenas (9-1) shoot 56.3 percent from the field (36-64) for the game, hitting 18 in each half, and connected on an amazing 10 of 21 from three-point range.  Claremont was even solid on what little free throws they shot, connecting on 9 of 11 from the stripe.  The Boxers (2-6) shot 40 percent from the field (20-50), with five three-pointers, and shot 6 of 10 from the free throw line.

Kristen Corrales (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) was the only Pacific player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points, all on three pointers.  Ashley Jacobs (So., Waimanalo, Hawaii) scored nine and Brittney Anderson (Jr., Missoula, Mont.) added eight.

Taylon Johnson came off the bench to lead five Athenas' players in double figures with 18 points.  Aria Krumwiede and Madeline Barnes scored 16 points apiece while Frannie Hemmelgarn posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Claremont won the battle of the boards 36-25 and turned the ball over just nine times.

The two teams played close ball over the first 12 minutes of the first half before the Athenas broke it open on their way into halftime.  Krumwiede's jumper at the 8:45 mark sparked a 19-6 run over the final eight minutes as Claremont limited the Boxers to just one made shot from the field in the stretch.  Krumwiede scored eight of the points during the run, allowing the Athenas to go into halftime with a 44-20 lead.

Pacific continued to struggle from the field in the opening moments of the second half, scoring just two field goals in the first eight minutes.  Jennifer Ringoen extended the Claremont lead to 28 points, 55-27, with her jumper at the 14:01 mark.  Paige Jensen (So., Bemidji, Minn.) managed to cut the lead to 25 with her jumper with 12:48 to go before Johnson's two free throws opened a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 33 points with 10:39 left.

Claremont kept their foot on the gas the rest of the way and eventually built their biggest lead of 43 points on a Morgan Joscelyn 5-footer with 1:40 to go.

Pacific will look to finish up their three-game southern California of a positive note on Tuesday when they take on La Verne.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
