The Carthage College women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the Dec. 7 "D3hoops.com" poll and fifth in the Dec. 7 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll, dropped its second-straight game on Monday, Dec. 13, losing a 49-46 decision to the University of Chicago (5-3) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
In a raggedy, low-scoring affair, Chicago led for most of the first half, although the game was tied, 19-19, at the break. The Maroons led by as much as eight points in the second half, 34-28, at 10:36. A 12-4 Carthage run produced a 40-40 tie at 4:31. The Lady Reds took a three-point lead, 46-43, at 1:41 on a jumper by Cailee Corcoran. Chicago's Bryanne Halfhill drained a three-pointer at 1:16 to knot the game, 46-46. Carthage turned the ball over on its next possession and fouled Meghan Herrick, who made two free throws for a 48-46 edge with 23 seconds to go. Corcoran missed what would have been a game-tying jumper at 11 seconds, and Gabby Chapa followed with missed three-pointer with five seconds to play. The Maroons rebounded. Herrick was fouled again and made the second of two free throws to close out the scoring at 49-46.
Neither team shot very well. Chicago shot 31 percent (15-48), including just 19 percent (5-26) in the first half. Carthage shot 34 percent for the game (16-47), including just 26 percent (6-23) in the first period. The Maroons out-rebounded the Lady Reds, 41-32. Meghan Herrick topped Chicago with a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds, while Morgan Herrick added 11 points. Cailee Corcoran (So., Oak Lawn, Ill./Chicago Marist) was the lone Carthage player in double figures with 11 points on five-of-eight shooting.
