The Scots led at halftime and were up 48-41 with 14 minutes left in the game, but visiting St. Mary's took over from that point on to topple Macalester 66-63 at the Leonard Center. The Cardinals had a pair of players with double-doubles and improve to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the MIAC.
Macalester shot 54% in the opening period and led 36-33 at halftime, getting 10 points from Taylor Pike (Fy., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) off the bench and eight from Shannon Rene (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial). Pike and Rene combined to go 5-for-9 from behind the three-point line in the half.
The Scots led 14-4 early and midway through the period were on top 20-10 before the Cardinals tallied 12 unanswered points to take their first lead.
Rene led the Scots with 13 points on the day. Following Pike with 10, were Audrey Mills (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) with nine, and Kyanna Jones (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) and Majra Mucic (Sr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) with eight apiece. Mucic grabbed 10 rebounds to top the team.
St. Mary's was led by Cherie Kulig with 14 points and Jessica Thone, who produced 13 points, 10 boards, five assists and three steals. The Cardinals closed out the contest on a 25-12 run over the final 13:23.
Macalester (0-5 overall / 0-2 MIAC) returns to the court Monday (Dec. 6) when it hosts St. Catherine.
