MADISON, N.J. (December 4, 2010) - The Rangers opened up Landmark Conference play this afternoon with a 66-57 win over Merchant Marine Academy. Junior Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) lead with 25 points to help Drew pick up its third-straight win over USMMA.
After each team going without a bucket in the first 2:30 of play, Drew (4-1, 1-0 Landmark) would capture the lead with 17:31 to play on a Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J./Mater Dei) layup. The Rangers would not relinquish the lead until the one-minute mark when they allowed the Mariners to crawl back into the game.
Merchant Marine (2-4, 0-1 Landmark) erased an eight-point deficit with a little over five minutes to play to take their first and only lead of the contest with 48 seconds left. The Rangers would not allow the momentum to carry into the second half, as Sam Plunkett (Long Island, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) hit a three as time expired to give the Rangers a 29-26 advantage going into the locker room.
Led by Barber, the Rangers would take advantage of the 36 Mariners turnovers in the second frame to pull away. The junior had 14 second-half points and a career-high seven steals as Drew scored 19 of its 66 points off turnovers.
To open up the final half of play, the Rangers went on a 15-4 run over the first six minutes of action to open their largest lead of the game, 20 points. They would hold a double-digit lead right up until the final seconds of play.
Senior Jess Reid (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) had a team-high six rebounds to go along with 11 points, her highest offensive output of the season. Jennifer Mateo (Union City, N.J./Union) matched career-high of eight points and led the Rangers in assists (5) and blocks (2).
The Rangers will begin to prepare for Tuesday, when they take on cross-street Rival FDU in Ferguson Gymnasium. Last year at home, the Rangers defeated the Devils 51-46. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
