RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team endured its first loss of its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) slate on Thursday night, suffering a 65-57 setback against league rival Gwynedd-Mercy College at Nerney Field House. Senior guard Julie Bonomo led the Cavaliers with a career-high 16 points in the loss.
Bonomo shot 6-for-10 from the field overall, including a 3-for-6 clip from beyond the 3-point line. Sophomore center Melissa Kudzmas eclipsed her career-high for the second straight game, netting 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting overall.
Freshman forward Annie Rivituso contributed eight points on 8-for-8 shooting from the free throw line. Freshman guard Brittany Sandone and freshman forward Colleen Stewart each scored seven points for the Blue & White.
Freshman guard Leithie Faison charged the Cavaliers' efforts on the glass, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman forward Maggie McElroy corralled seven boards in the loss.
Despite shooting just 19 percent in the first half, Cabrini trailed by just eight points, 27-19, at the intermission. In fact, after five straight points to begin the second period, the Cavaliers faced a three-point deficit with the ball at the 18:30 mark.
However, Gwynedd-Mercy responded with a 13-2 run over the next three-plus minutes, securing a game-high 14-point advantage, 40-26, with 15:01.
The Cavaliers continued clawing at the Griffins' lead and trailed by only seven points, 56-49, at the 3:12 mark. But, it was free throw shooting down the stretch for GMC that iced the victory. Gwynedd-Mercy shot 14-for-17 from the charity stripe for the contest.
Junior guard Brynn Cotteta scored 18 points and collected nine rebounds for the Griffins in the victory. Senior forward Kristy McGrath paired 15 points with eight boards.
Tonight's contest featured the two programs that vied for the CSAC title for three straight season from 2007-09. Gwynedd-Mercy captured the crown in 2007 before the Cavaliers hoisted back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. The Griffins have played for the CSAC championship in each of the last 13 seasons.
Cabrini (1-4, 1-1) continues its CSAC regular season schedule on the road against Rosemont College on Saturday, Dec. 4. Game time with the Ravens is set for 12 p.m.
