Tommies sink Scots in MIAC opener

Macalester hosted St. Thomas in the conference opener for both teams. The Tommies jumped to a 39-25 halftime lead and went on to gain the victory by a 77-49 tally.

Majra Mucic (Sr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds – collecting her second double-double in four games - to lead the Scots, while Shannon Rene (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) added 15 points.

St. Thomas enjoyed a 23-0 points off turnovers in the first half to take a 39-25 lead into intermission. Maggie Weiers scored 13 points on a 5-for-5 shooting night off the bench to lead to lead the way. Rachel Booth and Kellie Ring added 11 points each for the Tommies, who shot 54% and went 7-for-14 on threes.

Macalester trailed 22-17 at the 8:59 mark of the opening half, but St. Thomas began an 11-2 run and its lead was in double figures the rest of the way.

UST improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, while Macalester drops to 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the MIAC. The Tommies were picked second in the pre-season MIAC coaches' poll after winning the conference playoffs last season.
