Slow start dooms Inferno

More news about: Alverno

MILWAUKEE -- Visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College opened up the game with a 10-0 lead and sailed to a 69-54 Northern Athletics Conference victory over host Alverno College tonight at Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee.

The Inferno (1-5, 0-2 NAC) shot a miserable 18 percent (4of-22) in the first half while the Warriors (4-0, 1-0) shot 46 percent in the period for a 39-18 halftime advantage.

"We come out and are amped in warm-ups and in the locker room," Alverno assistant coach Nicole Kopacz said, "but somehow we just can't seem to translate that into a reasonable situation before halftime."

Alverno cut the deficit to eight points with just under 2 minutes to play, but the Warriors would end the game on an 11-4 run for the 69-54 final.

Junior Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./G-E-T) scored 11 points apiece to lead the Inferno offense, while senior Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman Jamie Hoernke (Mt. Horeb, Wis.) added eight and seven points, respectively.

Hoernke also had team-highs of five rebounds and four steals in just 15 minutes of action.

Wisconsin Lutheran's Erika Laete was one of four Warriors in double digits with game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Inferno will look to snap their three-game skid on Saturday when they host Aurora University. The conference game is set for a 7 p.m. start in Reiman Gymnasium.
