LANGHORNE, PA - The Crimson Eagles played 38 solid minutes of basketball Tuesday evening during the squad's home opener against Trinity University. Unfortunately, it was the final two minutes that proved to be the deciding factor during a 64-59 loss to the Tigers.
After leading for the majority of the second frame, PBU watched a 57-52 edge with a minute and a half remaining quickly vanish. Fueled by a ruthless full-court press, Trinity erased the deficit by forcing three PBU turnovers on three consecutive possessions.
Thanks to a 9-0 spurt, the Tigers went from down five to ahead by four in less than 60 ticks. Needing to play the foul game down the stretch, the Crimson Eagles helplessly watched the visitors hit nine straight free throws to help close out the game and seal the five point victory.
Despite 24 turnovers for the game, PBU helped negate some of their blunders by ripping the nets from long range. The Crimson Eagles nailed eight 3-point bombs during the first stanza alone and finished the contest by knocking down 11 of 24 attempts - 45.8 percent for the game.
Perhaps most surprisingly, however, was that the host group won the battle on the glass. Trinity entered the contest averaging nearly 27 offensive rebounds per game, but by the time the final horn sounded, the Crimson Eagles held a narrow 44-41 overall edge in rebounds, signaling PBU's second highest mark of season.
However, despite the host group's efficiency in a number of statistical categories, Trinity dominated at the charity stripe as the visitors made more free throws (22) than the Crimson Eagles attempted for the game (14). The difference was felt during the final minute of play when Trinity's ability to knock down shots from the charity stripe proved to be the difference maker.
The Crimson Eagles were led by Haley Weber's career high mark of 19 points on five of 10 shooting from downtown. Weber also pitched in six rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Senior Careth Herron also added 19 points before fouling out deep into the second half.
The basketball team will look to bounce back during their first conference game of the year this Thursday. The Crimson Eagles will take on Rosemont College on the road, beginning at 6:00 pm.
