WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team used a strong shooting performance to down Hood College 80-51 in a non-league contest Sunday night.

Shenandoah (2-3) snaps a three-game losing streak with the win over the Blazers (4-1) and shot a season-best 53 percent from the field in the process.

The 80 points scored is also a season-best, with coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway's club earning free chicken wings for the 209 in attendance due to an athletic department promotion.

The Hornets shot 58 percent (18 for 31) in the opening 20 minutes of play to take a 45-19 lead at the break.

Hood was held to just six field goals in the first half and turned the ball over 17 times. SU scored 23 points off of those first half miscues.

The second half brought more of the same as Shenandoah eventually pushed the margin out to 45 points before Guyant-Holloway emptied her bench for the final five minutes of the contest.

All 17 women played in the contest for SU, including five who were seeing action in either their first or second game of the season.

These reserves missed 9 of the Hornets final 10 shots from the field as Hood outscored SU 18-2 in the final 5:08 of the game.

Junior Mandy Johnston paced the victors with 15 points with freshman Sam Akers adding 12 and senior Crystal Williams 10.

For the Blazers, Briana White matched Johnston's output; she had six of her 15 points in the final five minutes of the game.

Shenandoah opens up USA South Conference play on Wednesday at 5:30 against pre-season favorite Christopher Newport.
