ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's basketball team erased a seven-point second-half deficit to earn a 69-58 victory over visiting Vassar College on Sunday evening at 'Wick's Lambros Arena. Freshmen starters Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy), Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic), Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central), and Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) combined for 59 points and 27 rebounds in the win. The Hawks are now 3-1 overall. The Brewers fall to 2-2.Vassar led by a count of 50-43 with 7:27 remaining in the game, but 'Wick scored 14 of the game's next 18 points over the next 4:34 to take the lead and never looked back in the 11-point victory. The Hawks would finish the game on a 26-8 run.
Four straight Hartwick points from Caulfield and a layup from Brittany Ladner (Farmingdale, ME/Hall-Dale) cut the Brewer lead to one point, 50-49, with 5:24 to play. Following four straight points from Vassar's Brittany Parks, Veit hit a three-pointer, connected on a pair from the free-throw line, and gave the Hawks the lead for good, 57-54, with her game-high fourth trey with 2:53 showing on the clock.
Vassar got as close as one point on its next possession with a Hannah Senfleber' layup, but the Hawks closed out the Brewers from the line, hitting 12-of-12 from the stripe in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
Purcell led Hartwick with 18 points. She added seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Veit added 17 points including her four triples, and Foglia contributed 16 points, six boards, and two steals. Caulfield was dominant on the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds. She also netted eight points and notched three assists.
Vassar received a game-high 25 points from Brittany Parks. Senftleber added 13 points and Natalie Allen scored six and registered a team-best eight rebounds.
The game featured 10 lead changes and six tie scores. Hartwick held a two-point edge at the half, 26-24, but shot a dismal 25.9%. The Hawks were hot in the second half though, hitting 52.6% (10-for-19) from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. They also connected on 28 of 34 free throws. The Brewers hit 33% in the first half and 35.5% for the game in the loss.
Hartwick returns to action on Tuesday in Saratoga. The Hawks will look for win number four with a game against Skidmore College at 6 p.m.
