VIRGINIA BEACH -- Depth and balance combined to steer Virginia Wesleyan College's women's team into a 26-0 lead Wednesday en route to a 93-35 victory over Randolph College's WildCats at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. It was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams, but VWC (3-0, 1-0) dominated early and never let up. By the time the final buzzer sounded, all 14 Virginia Wesleyan players who entered the game scored at least two points. Junior Shawnee Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) led the scoring parade with 17 points, hitting 6-of-11 field goal attempts, including a trio of triples. Senior Kristina Jameson (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) connected on a game-high 4-of-5 treys en route to 14 points, sophomore Rachael Miller (Sterling, Va./Park View) added 13 points, and junior Kristen Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian) contributed with 11 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. VWC's pressing defense helped spark the opening run as Randolph (0-3, 0-1) turned the ball over eight times in the first six minutes. The Marlins, who opened up a 38-5 lead, eventually took off the press, but Randolph continued to struggle and finished with 35 turnovers. VWC committed only nine. Virginia Wesleyan led 55-13 at halftime and led 67-17 when rookie Symonne Newsome (Riestertown, Md./St. Paul's) hit a layup with 15:30 remaining to be played. The Marlins' largest lead was 83-20 following a jumper by sophomore Kerry Johnson (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) with 8:01 on the clock. Brandie Witt (Beford, Va./Liberty) led a young Randolph squad with 11 points and rookie Courtney Bouchard (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) added 10 points. Sophomore Sam Sublett (Beford, Va./Staunton River) led all rebounders with nine. Virginia Wesleyan helped its cause with 21 assists, led by Jameson with six, and 20 steals, led by rookie Katie Tassa (Bristow, Va./Manassas Osbourn Park) with five. --AMDG--
