Lady Royals Cruise Past King's, 87-49, Tuesday Evening At The Long Center

SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton bounced back from a disappointing weekend with an 87-49 victory over former Freedom Conference rival King's College Tuesday night at the Long Center.

After getting off to slow starts in recent losses to William Paterson and DeSales, the Lady Royals jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first seven minutes of play and never looked back. For the game, Scranton shot over 46 percent from the field and nearly 82 percent from the field free throw line.

The Lady Royals, now 2-2, were led by sharp-shooting senior guards Megan Kopecki (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) and Jennifer King (Taylor, Pa./Riverside), who finished with 17 and 13 points, respectively.  Kopecki also contributed eight assists and five rebounds.

Junior forward Sarah Gage (Ledgewood, N.J./Roxbury) also had a strong showing for Scranton, scoring a season-high 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field, and senior point-guard Colleen McLane (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) dished out a career-high eight assists.  Sophomore guard Katherine Torto (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Central Catholic) established a career-high with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field.

Junior guard Samantha Simcox (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and sophomore guard Katlin Michaels (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) led the Lady Monarchs with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  The loss drops King's to 2-2.

The Lady Royals will travel to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Steven's Technical Institute next Wednesday, December 1st, beginning at 7:30 pm.

News & Notes:  Tonight's game was the first between the Lady Royals and the Lady Monarchs since Scranton defeated King's, 79-63, in the championship game of the Freedom Conference tournament on February 24, 2007…Scranton now holds a 58-12 lead since the all-time series with King's began on March 12, 1975…King knocked down 3 3-pointers to move into fifth place on the Lady Royals' all-time list with 108…Torto's previous career-high was an 8-point effort against Drew University on January 8, 2010, in Madison, New Jersey.
