MEADVILLE, Pa
. – True freshman Erica Restich, who hit the game-winning shot against Marietta less than 24 hours ago, had a good look at the top of the arc with a chance to send the championship game to overtime, but missed with only seconds left on the clock as Waynesburg College overcame a 11-point deficit early into the second half to win by three, 71-68 in the championship game of the 2010 Allegheny Invitational.
Different from a game ago, the Gators (2-1, 0-0 NCAC) came out strong in the first half shooting 45% from the floor and shot 5-11 from long range. Senior point guard Britni Mohney sparked the deep threat through the first 20 minutes knocking down two of three trifectas. Ann Ryan also provided some scoring punch in the first coming off the bench and chipping in nine points.
Heading into the break, the Gators held a nine-point lead 38-29. The second half for the women was similar to the first in terms of shooting. With fewer shots taken, Allegheny still shot at a clip of 45% for the second half. Senior Jill Gregory was held scoreless in the first half as she was plagued with early foul trouble. The leading scorer so far this season came out on fire picking up all of her team-high 16 points in the second half. Gregory was named All-Tournament after averaging 17 points through the tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (3-0) Elisha Jones also had a big second half. Jones, who had nine first half points added 15 more in the second half en route to her being named tournament most valuable player.
Daryl Ford and Heidi Goeller joined Gregory as the only Gators to record double-digit points. Ford collected 10 points on 5-5 shooting. Goeller's 11 points did not come easily inside as she tallied five of them from the charity stripe. Restich again led the team in boards as she pulled down eight to go along with her nine points off the bench.
The Gators will be back in action on Tuesday November 23rd as they travel to take on Washington and Jefferson in non-conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
