Emory Sets Program Scoring Record in 129-82 Win over Sewanee

 

The Emory University women's basketball team utilized a program-record scoring output to defeat the University of the South Tigers, 129-82, during the opening game of the Emory Tip-Off Tournament.

Emory's 129 points scored during the game was the highest total in the history of the program, besting the previous high of 124 set against Wesleyan College during the 1992 season.  The Eagles also set a team records with a 63.6% field goal percentage, besting the previous team high of 62% set against Agnes Scott College in 2000, and 39 assists, five more than the previous best also in that game against Agnes Scott.

The Eagles came out firing, jumping out to a 16-2 lead with 14:53 left in the first half behind a 14-0 run.  Highlighting the run was junior Becca Feldman, who scored six of her nine first half points during the run.

Sewanee would battle back to get within four points at the 10:22 mark in the first half, but the Eagles would  go on their second 14-0 run of the half to increase their lead to 38-20 with eight minutes left in the half.  Emory would go on to finish the first half with their largest lead of the frame, 65-39.  The Eagles' 65 points matched a program record for most points in a half, and their 63% field goal percentage was the 10th-best in a half in the program's history.

Freshman Hannah Lilly led all Emory scorers at the half with 14 points on a 6-for-7 shooting performance from the field, including a pair of three pointers on as many attempts.

The Eagles would add on another 64 points in the second half on a 64.3% shooting effort during the frame, matching the sixth-best percentage for a half in the program's history.  Lilly would finish the game with team highs with 22 points and seven assists, while going 10-for-11 from the field to match the single-game record for Emory.  Melissa Koike, Shantel Houston, Misha Jackson, Feldman and Selena Castillo all contributed double-digit scoring efforts as well.

Emory finished the game with scoring advantages of 99-24 from bench players, 76-10 on fast break opportunities, 76-28 in the paint, and 51-16 off turnovers.

Dani Kabbes led all Sewanee players with 19 points and 11 rebounds during the game.  Heather Baier contributed with 15 points, while Claire Elliot scored 10 for the Tigers.

With the win, Emory improved to 2-0 on the season, while Sewanee dropped to 1-1 on the campaign with the loss.  The Eagles advance to tomorrow's 8:00 PM Emory Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game against St. Benedict.
