Cartwright's 31 Lifts Cowgirls In Overtime

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sophomore guard Coco Cartwright took advantage of her first career start as she poured in 31 points to rally the Hardin-Simmons women's basketball team to a 74-72 overtime win over St. Mary's (Minn.) in the Colorado College Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs.

Cartwright hit 6-of-9 3-pointers in the game and was 12-for-18 from the field. She had two big 3-pointers in overtime as the Cowgirls quickly fell behind by five points.

St. Mary's, who was playing its third game of the season, jumped out to a 9-0 lead and led 37-19 with a minute to play in the first half. HSU cut it to 38-25 at halftime and then came out of the locker room on fire.

Whitney Enis scored seven quick points for the Cowgirls and Cartwright hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cowgirls a 44-38 and cap a 25-1 run to end the first half and the first 4:17 of the second half. It went back and forth from their and SMU retook the lead on a Brittany Begrowicz lay-up with 7:34 to play. Jess Miller's basket gave SMU a 65-60 lead with 2:18 to play.

HSU responded with a Cartwright 3-pointer with :54 to play and a Lindsey Newcombe jumper with four seconds to play to send it to overtime.

Cherie Kulig's 3-pointer gave St Mary's a 72-68 lead in overtime with 2:39 to play, but the Cowgirls shut them out the rest of the way. In the meantime Cartwright hit another 3-pointer, Newcombe hit a lay-up and Enis split a pair of free throws.

Lindsey Newcombe had 12 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks for the Cowgirls. Kulig paced four St Mary's players in double figures with 16 points.

The Cowgirls will play Colorado College on Sunday at 4 p.m.
