MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College cruised to a 90-74 victory over visiting Bethany Lutheran College in the final game of the 2010 Alverno Tip-Off Classic today at Reiman Gymnasium in Milwaukee to capture its first victory of the young 2010-11 season. In the first game of the day Buena Vista University defeated Northland College 75-58.

"It feels good to win that's for sure," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "I'm glad the team can feel what it's like to get a win."

The Inferno (1-2) led by 19 at halftime and extended their lead to as many as 25 during the second half. The team finally shot the ball well, something that hasn't been the case in their first two games, as the Inferno connected on 55 percent of their attempts from the floor, including a season-high 46 percent (6-of-13) from behind the 3-point arc. The 90 points scored is the fourth-most all-time in program history.

Junior Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) both came off the bench and each nailed a pair of 3's to lead the offensive attack. Kontowski had a game-high 22 points, also a career-high, on 7-of-9 shooting and was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Kochanowski was perfect from the floor (4-of-4) for 10 points and had a game-high six assists.

Also scoring a career-high tonight was Kaitlin Schaeren (New Berlin, Wis./West) as she hit double-digits for the first time on 3-of-4 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe for 10 points. The sophomore center also had four assists.

Senior guard Gabby Allen (Milwaukee/Bay View) added 13 points, junior forward Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) added 11 points and six rebounds while senior Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) added nine points to go along with her team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./G-E-T) also chipped in seven points.

"I was glad to see a ton of players score, and a ton in double-figures. That is what we look like during practice, and we finally played how we practiced."

Jessica Englund recorded a double-double for the Vikings (0-3) with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and her teammates Nicole Jones and Anna Cepek added 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Alverno is next in action on Tuesday when it hosts UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
