Marietta Women's Basketball Tops Alfred 60-54

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College bounced back from a one-point loss in its season opener to defeat Alfred (N.Y.) University 60-54 and win the consolation game of the Allegheny Invitational Saturday (Nov. 20) afternoon in Meadville, Pa. [Box Score]

Sophomore All-Tournament honoree Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) paced the Pioneers (1-1) with another double-double and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) contributed 16 points, while senior Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier) added seven points and 11 boards and junior Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula/Edgewood) had eight points and five rebounds.

Lyndsay Murphy scored a game-high 26 point to lead Alfred. Courtney Lincoln added nine points, while Autumn McLain finished with six points and 14 rebounds.

The Saxons (1-2) led the majority of the first half, including by six points, 18-12, with 5:51 to play in the period, but the Pioneers fought back within a point, 22-21, at intermission.

The scoring picked up in the second half and the lead changed hands six times before Marietta took the advantage for good, 55-54, on a pair of free throws from Guiler with 3:11 to play in the game. The Pioneer defense kept the Saxons off the scoreboard for the final 3:38, enabling them to secure the six-point win.

Marietta is back in action Saturday (Nov. 27) afternoon when it plays host to Penn State University-Beaver, Washington & Jefferson College and the College of Wooster for the 29th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament. The Pioneers will tip-off with Penn State-Beaver at 6 p.m.
