SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore guard Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) led three players in doubles figures with a career high 19 points as Western New England College defeated Wilkes (PA) 69-56 in the opening round of the Golden Bears' Women's Hoop Classic Friday night (Nov. 19).

Sophomore center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) added 17 points coming off the bench while sophomore guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) netted 13 points with five assists and five rebounds as WNEC improved its record to 2-0. Junior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) was 4-of-6 from the field for eight points.

Van Huysen had 17 points in the opening half to help the Golden Bears take a 34-20 lead at the break. She finished making 7-of-11 shots from the field, including 5-of-7 three-pointers. She also tied her career high with six rebounds.

Wilkes defended the outside shots better in the second half, but that opened the middle for Radzikowski who used her height advantage to score 13 of her points in the final half while connecting on eight-of-nine attempts.

The Colonels (1-1) also had three players scoring in doubles figures with sophomore forward Angela Palmerio (Telford, PA) firing in 13 points in a reserve role. Senior forward Brittany Ely (Montrose, PA) contributed a double-double with 12 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward Megan Kazmerski (Kingston, PA) also scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Western New England College had a nice shooting night making 50% of its field-goal attempts. Wilkes shot only 31.5% from the floor, but had a 39-36 edge off the boards.

The Golden Bears will meet Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the championship game at 3:00 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 20). The Trailblazers advanced with a 58-40 victory over MIT.

In the second game Friday, junior forward Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, MA) registered a double-double coming off the bench with 16 points and 18 rebounds for MCLA. The Trailblazers had a five-point lead at halftime (24-19) and held a 35-30 advantage before breaking the game open with a 15-0 run.

Junior guard Alie Dobrovoic (Little Falls, NY) also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds along with three assists. Senior guard Molly Broda (Southampton, MA) added nine points and junior forward Olivia McMullen (Broadalbin, NY) 10 rebounds.

Massachusetts College (2-0) shot 37.5% from the field and held a commanding 61-28 advantage in rebounding.

MIT (0-2) struggled from the field making only 25.4% of its shots. Freshman guard Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, CA) led the Engineers with eight points while junior guard Marissa Good (Escondido, CA) chipped-in with seven points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Lauren Sascha-Burton (Seattle, WA) added six points and five rebounds.
