Central College used some stifling defense to stymie Martin Luther (Minn.) 85-65 in the Nebraska Wesleyan Tip-Off Tournament third-place women's basketball game Saturday.

The Dutch limited Martin Luther (1-2) to a chilly 27.4 percent from the field while connecting on 47.5 percent of their own shots. The win improves Central to 2-1, already matching last year's season wins total.

Central placed five players in double figures.  Point guard Cory Bacon and freshman guard Annie Sarcone each produced career highs with 14 points while forward Kelsey Schuring, guard Jordan Waddell and forward Alyssa Schwartz each scored 10.

Waddell, who was Central's top scorer in Friday's 87-56 loss to St. Catherine (Minn.), was named to the all-tournament team. She also had four assists Saturday and knocked down six 3-point baskets on the weekend.

Schuring was the top rebounder Saturday with eight while Bacon dished out six assists and sophomore guard Katie Kepford had five.

Central raced to a 45-32 lead and never let the margin shrink despite emptying the bench in the second half.

"We really didn't have any letdown after getting a nice halftime lead," coach Jerry Nikkel said. "It was a great win for us and a good team effort. We're pretty excited about being 2-1."

Central outrebounded Martin Luther 45-44 but was outshot at the free throw line. The Dutch hit 19-of-27 while Martin Luther was 28-of-42. Each team committed 24 turnovers.

Tuesday Central is home for a women's-men's doubleheader. The Dutch take on Westminster (Mo.) at 5:30 p.m. while the men meet Augsburg (Minn.) at 7:30 p.m. Central's only previous meeting with Westminster was a 75-66 victory at Fulton, Mo. Nov. 15, 2008.

The Blue Jays are 2-1.
