WENHAM, Mass.--First-year forward Briana White registered her first career double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to propel the Hood College women's basketball team (2-0) to a 60-51 victory over New England College (1-2) in the opening round of the Gordon College Tournament Friday afternoon.
Hood ripped off the first 16 points of the contest and never trailed en route to the victory, which secured a spot in the championship game for the Blazers against the host Fighting Scots. Gordon edged the Thomas College Terriers, 59-57.
Hood kept the Pilgrims off the scoreboard for more than nine minutes and led by as many as 25 points in the opening stanza. The Blazers held a 36-19 lead at halftime. NEC got no closer than seven in the second half as the Blazers maintained the upperhand.
White connected on 10-of-15 from the field, including a three-pointer, to go along with 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Senior Allyson Lethbridge passed Dana Shook '07 for ninth place on the Blazers' scoring chart. Her 12 points in tonight's game gave her 770 for her career. She now trails Danielle Gallagher by 103 points for eighth place. Senior Kameran Evans contributed nine points and six rebounds while sophomore Dyanna Prater finished with seven points, six boards, four steals and four assists.
The Blazers shot 38.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Pilgrims, 43-35. Rachel Williams paced NEC with a double-double of 16 points and 13 boards.
Hood won back-to-back games for the first time since early on in the 2008-09 season when the Blazers bested Wilson College and Trinity University (D.C.) on consecutive nights. The Blazers look to make it three in a row Saturday in the title game against Gordon at 3 p.m.
