Late Surge Lifts Maroons Past Loras

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Bryanne Halfhill scored 17 points and Jenna Lillemoe finished with 15 as the University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated Loras College 74-65 in the opening round of the Lakeland College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Friday evening.



Chicago (2-0) trailed for most of the second half until a Halfhill layup evened the score at 63-63 with 3:55 left in the game.

Brittany Kent's basket put Loras (0-2) on top for the last time 65-64 at the 2:36 mark before the Maroons closed out the game with a 10-0 run.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Halfhill and Lillemoe gave Chicago a 70-65 edge with 1:53 to go.



Chicago led 33-30 at the half. The lead changed hands seven times during the first five minutes of the second stanza until Loras went ahead 42-40 on Lindsey LaBadie's three-pointer at the 15:09 mark. Loras maintained the advantage for the next 11 minutes.

Taylor Simpson joined Halfhill and Lillemoe in double figures with 10 points. Meghan Herrick pulled down 11 rebounds, while Halfhill and Simpson collected nine and eight boards, respectively.

LaBadie led all scores with 18 points, while Kent (16) and Kelsey James (12) also reached double digits.



Chicago will take on tournament host Lakeland (1-1) in Saturday's championship game at 4 p.m. The Muskies got past Augustana College 63-54 in Friday's first contest.
