DOVER, Del. - Wesley College led by as many as 21 in the second half, but had to hold off a hard charging Washington College team for a 72-67 victory.
Fouls slowed the game as the teams were whistled for 49 fouls and combined to shoot 69 free throws.
The Wolverines led 20-17 before threes by Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) and Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) and a three point play by Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) stretched the lead to a dozen points with 9:18 left in the first half. The Shorewomen never got closer than eight for the rest of the half and another three, this one by Katie Kirk (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), in the closing seconds stretched Wesley's lead to 49-33 at the intermission.
A layup by Boyd with 13:18 left in the game made it 63-42, but it was the last field goal for Wesley on the night. A 16-2 run cut it to 65-58 with 6:39 to play on a Hansen jumper. The Wolverines shot 10 free throws over the remainder of the game, making seven to keep Washington at bay.
Boyd paced the Wolverines with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds and six assists. Miller netted 17 points and grabbed eight boards, to go along with three steals. Beddia came off the bench to score a dozen points, while Kirk added 10.
Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) led Wesley with 13 rebounds.
The Wolverines went 9-of-22 from three point range on the night (41 percent), including 8-of-15 in the first half.
Sally O'Donnell led all players with 29 points for Washington. Hansen also reached double figures with 10.
The Shorewomen held a 53-43 advantage on the glass, led by Erin Kile with 12 rebounds.
Wesley is back in action at the Mike Durgala Classic at Johns Hopkins on November 20-21.
