DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College led from start to finish as the Aggies opened the 2010-11 season with a 68-44 home victory over Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
Delaware Valley jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back. The squad increased the lead to 35-18 at halftime and to as many as 37 in the second stanza. Defense played a key role as the Aggies helped force the Nittany Lions into 33 turnovers and held them to 27.9 percent shooting from the field.
Nine of the 10 healthy players on the Delaware Valley scored in the contest, led by Brittany Battinieri's 18 points. The 2010 all-Freedom Conference honoree also added seven assists, four rebounds and four steals in 30 minutes of action.
Freshman Sarah Innerst hit four 3-pointers and finished the evening with 14 points while Sarah Delcasale added 12 points and five assists. 2010 Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Emily Soper had six points, three rebounds and two blocks before fouling out.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Tiara Braithwaite had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Khalisha Royal added 10 points and seven boards.
