NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Utilizing a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense, the Carleton College men's basketball team knocked off No. 21-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College, 73-61, at West Gym.

The Knights (16-8, 9-6 MIAC) snapped the Gusties' (21-4, 15-1 MIAC) 12-game win streak overall and 21-game streak against conference opponents. The victory also locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs for Carleton, ensuring a home game in the quarterfinals.

"This was an outstanding win against an exceptional opponent in Gustavus," said Carleton head coach Ryan Kersahw. "I am extremely proud of our team for the discipline, toughness, and attention to detail we played with tonight. It was very satisfying to watch, and I am so proud of and happy for each player on our roster."

Gustavus entered the contest shooting .490 as a team, seventh-best in NCAA Division III, but the Carleton defense limited the Gusties to a season-worst .345 shooting line. The Gusties' top three scorers—Spencer Swanson, Wyatt Olson, and Myles Barnette—came into play averaging a combined 33.9 points on .541 shooting, but the Knight defense limited the trio to a cumulative 18 points on 7-of-22 (.318) shooting.

The Carleton offense received contributions up and down the lineup, and the Knights shot an efficient .491 as a team, including 7-of-14 (.500) from 3-point range. In addition to Harris' 17 points, Carleton received a 15-point, eight-rebound, two-block, two-steal effort from Sam Koelling. Matt Drake and Tobias Averill rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 11 and 10, respectively. Spencer Goetz chipped in seven points, seven assists, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

After seven early lead changes, the Knights trailed 14-11 with 14:23 to play in the first half.

Across nearly 11 minutes of game action, Carleton went on a game-changing 23-5 run to claim a 34-19 lead with 3:48 left in the opening frame. During this stretch, Gustavus was held to 1-of-12 from the field and coughed up six turnovers thanks to an active Knights' defense.

The turnovers proved to be the difference in the first half, allowing the Knights to build a 41-28 halftime lead. Carleton turned 10 Gustavus miscues into 13 points, all while holding one of the nation's top shooting teams to 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from the field.

Out of the locker room, the visitors quickly trimmed the Knights' lead down to five after rattling off eight straight points. The home team had the answer, though, using a 7-0 spurt of their own as part of a 10-2 run to extend their lead back to 51-38 with 12:53 to play.

The Knights' double-digit advantage held until the 3:13 mark, as a Brady Kienitz' 3-pointer cut the lead to seven, 62-55. Four straight points from Drake put Carleton back up by 11, and the Knights closed out their first victory over a top-25 opponent since beating No. 23 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Nov. 25, 2023.

The Gusties, who are usually led by four players averaging double figures, had just two players eclipse that mark today: Kienitz with 17 and Jake Schmitt with 13.
