Cambridge, MA --- Five different WPI players connected on multiple 3-pointers as the Crimson and Gray drained 17 trifectas and shot 53.4% overall from the field in a 104-67 NEWMAC road victory over MIT inside Rockwell Cage on Tuesday evening. The 104 points marked the 49th time in program history WPI has reached the century mark and the first time since registering 103 in a win over Mitchell in November of 2021.
Worcester's Engineers, who moved up three spots to 19th in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25, have now won six straight and move to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. MIT dips to 8-9 on the season and 2-6 in in NEWMAC action.
The opening 13 minutes saw eight lead changes and four ties before WPI received baskets from five different players, including 3-for-3 from downtown to highlight a quick 13-0 spurt over a span of 3:13 to transform a 25-23 deficit into a 36-25 advantage with 3:57 to go before the half. After four quick MIT points, WPI outscored the host 11-3 over the final 2:56 of the stanza to take a 47-32 lead into the locker room at the break.
Both teams shot over 50% from the floor in the second half (WPI 51.2% and MIT 53.3%) but the difference was from behind the 3-point line as Worcester's Engineers was 10-for-24 from downtown while Cambridge's Engineers were 0-3 on trifectas.
WPI captain Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) shot 8-for-11 on the night on his way to a game-high 22 points . The senior point guard moved passed Mike Shannon '97 (1,065) and former teammate John Adams '24 (1,071) to move into 21st all-time on the WPI scoring list with 1,084 points. Graduate student Nicholas Margetson (Baldwin, NY) drained 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from downtown, on his way to 16 points and classmate Tim Reidy (Needham, MA) parlayed 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point land into 15 points.
Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH) also reached double figures with 10 points to go along with four defensive boards and three assists. J.R. Newman (Havertown, PA) led the way in both rebounds and assists with career and game-bests of eight of each along with eight points, coming up just short of his first career double-double.
Nathan Bledsoe (San Antonio, Texas) collected all nine of his points on 3-pointers, Justin Molen (Newark, DE) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds and Jack Bleier (Victor, NY) contributed seven points and four boards. Matt Morvillo (Bedford, MA) and Jeremy Cai (Beijing, China) netted five and four points respectively as the WPI reserves outscored the MIT bench 41-20 on the night.
Rome Delgado-Gonzalez (Miami, FL) topped MIT in scoring with 14 points. Jackson Weiland (Medford, OR) was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field shooting on his way to 12 points, Spencer Lin (Menlo Park, CA) totaled 11 points, and team-bests of 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Parker Spann (Omaha, NE) reached double figures in scoring with 10 points.
WPI continues its busy week of three conference road games in five days on Thursday, venturing to Norton to face Wheaton at 7pm. MIT has its league bye on Thursday and will being the second half of conference play on Saturday, hosting Springfield at 1pm.
