REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's basketball team (13-3, 5-2) held Pomona-Pitzer to sub-40 percent shooting and made 18 three in route to a 94-67 blowout win inside Currier Gym Monday evening.
The Sagehens were the first to score but a Chozen Amadi assisted, Jake Hlywiak three 16 seconds later put the Bulldogs up 3-2, a lead they would hold the rest of the game.
Omari Ferguson, Dayvon Gates, and Lucas Gordon all found their way into the paint which led to a seven-point lead, 13-6.
With a seven-minute three-point "drought", Amadi connected on his first three before Natan Mattera made his first. The following two buckets would also come from behind the arc as Hlywiak knocked down two for a 29-17 advantage inside of 10 minutes to play in the opening half.
Three more Redlands threes and a defensive performance that did not allow any points over the final three minutes put the Bulldogs ahead by 25, 53-28, at the half.
The experienced Sagehens came out of the half playing better defense as they held Redlands to 1-of-5 shooting and 0-for-3 from deep in the first two minutes, but Jhace Boston hit his midrange jumper, and they allowed only two baskets to maintain their 20 plus point lead.
From the 13:22 mark to the 7:51 mark Redlands made five threes, three from Hlywiak and one from Amadi and Mattera as their lead was 28, 79-51.
Evan Lucas helped the Bulldogs close out the win with a pair of threes off assists from Christopher Carter and BJ Taylor over the final three minutes of their 27-point win.
That 27-point margin of victory is the largest for the Bulldogs against the Sagehnes since 2006. This is also the first season sweep of Pomona-Pitzer since 2012-13 when they won all three meetings.
They held the Sagehens to 39.7 percent shooting and only six made threes. It is the second time holding a team under 40 percent and the eighth time allowing six or fewer threes, posting a 7-1 record in those games.
Hlywiak had a game-high 20 points after reaching double figures only once in the previous six games. Currey quietly had a great game despite not scoring as he had a career-high 10 assists along with three rebounds, three blocks, and a steal.
The Bulldogs begin a three-game road trip with a game in Orange at Chapman University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
