OWINGS MILLS, MD – Junior Charlie Jackson scored a career-high 23 points and finished with a double-double to lead Johns Hopkins to a 78-72 win at Stevenson Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 5-5 on the season while the Mustangs fall to 6-5.
Leading 71-70, Tanti Felli made two shots from the charity stripe to spark a 7-2 game-ending run. The Blue Jays got five of the seven points from the free throw line as they pulled away in the final 86 seconds.
Hopkins jumped out to a 9-0 lead, with Felli and Jeb Williams combining for seven points, in the opening 2:09. Kendall Seguignol got the Mustangs on the board with a pair of free throws to ignite an 8-0 run as the home team made it a one-point game. The first half was one of runs as the Blue Jays answered with a 9-3 spurt to push out to an 18-11 lead on a Jackson triple at 11:11.
Mason Jones answered on the other end with a three-point play to spark a 17-8 Stevenson run, over a nearly nine-minute span. Cameron Sapienza capped the run with a three-pointer to put the Mustangs up 28-26 late with 2:27 to play in the half. Jones accounted for 11 of his team's 17 points during the run. Wyatt Eglinton Manner tied the game with a layup 61 seconds later, followed by a pair of Jackson free throws and JHU led 30-28 with 12 ticks on the clock. Bryson Whitely had the final say of the half however, scoring on a layup to knot the score at 30.
Stevenson picked up where it left off, opening the half with a 9-4 spurt to push out to a 39-34 lead less than four minutes in. A Brian Johansson converted a three-point play at 16:02 to kick start a 10-0 run, fueled by a 6-of-7 showing from the charity stripe. Will Stevenson capped the run with two from the line to put the Blue Jays up 44-39 with 14:13 to play. The teams traded blows over the next two minutes and the Jays still led by five.
Kole Beaman then made back-to-back buckets, followed by a Jones three-point play and Stevenson grabbed a 54-52 lead midway through the half. Hopkins used a 11-6 run, powered by four points each from Johansson and Jackson, to grab a 63-60 lead with 6:46 on the clock. The teams went back to trading scores over the ensuing five minutes and JHU led 71-70 with 1:26 to go.
Jackson posted his second career double-double with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. This was his first career 20-point game as he went 7-of-9 inside the arc and 8-of-10 from the line. Johansson finished with 17 points and went 8-of-10 from the line. Williams added 11 points as the third Blue Jay to finish in double figures. Jones scored a game-high 27 points, going 6-of-12 from the field and 15-of-18 from the lie. He also led the Mustangs with seven rebounds. Ronald Ayers also finished in double digits with 12 points.
Hopkins won the rebound battle for the seventh time this season, outrebounding Stevenson 41-30. The Blue Jays shot 47.1 percent from the field while holding the Mustangs to 38.1 percent. This was the first meeting between the two since 2009. JHU is now 8-2 all-time against Stevenson.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, January 8 as the Blue Jays host the Christopher Newport Captains. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 6:00 pm.
