WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team closed out the 2024 portion of its slate on a resounding note, thumping Northland College 137-75 Monday afternoon in a neutral-site game at Wisconsin Dells.
Grinnell improved to 10-2 for the second season in a row while running its winning streak to eight games dating back to Nov. 22.
The Pioneers' defense was stifling, collecting a season-high 28 steals with the aid of 41 Northland turnovers. Grinnell's steals total ranks ninth in program history and is the highest for the team since a 2018 game against Knox College.
The contest marked the first-ever meeting between the teams as Grinnell bolted out to a 70-31 halftime lead and never looked back. Northland, 0-12, got out to a 7-5 cushion early but the Pioneers responded with a 13-2 run beginning with Jordan Lee's '27 trey. Harris Dar '28 followed with a basket and Kai Te Huki '27 made a 3-pointer for a 13-7 lead. After a Northland basket, Dar sank two free throws and Carson DeBruhl '27 made a 3-pointer for an 18-9 lead.
The Pioneers rode a balanced scoring attack that saw five players reach double figures, led by 20-point performances from Jackson Leone '25 and Gabe Garcia '27. Leone made four treys and was one of 11 Pioneers to hit from long range.
Te Huki added 19 points, Dar scored 14, David Bluder '25 put in 12 and Lee tallied 10. Leone and Dar had five and four steals, respectively, and Dar also dished out nine assists. John Vincent '26 had a career-best seven boards and blocked three shots. Jack Ruhanen '25 and Strahinja Nikolic '27 added six boards apiece, with Nikolic's being a career-high.
The Pioneers are in action again Saturday with a Midwest Conference test at Lake Forest College.
