Brandeis men batter Rams with 25 3-pointers, 112-64

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team set a school-record with 25 3-pointers tonight – tying the previous record of 17 by halftime – as the Judges cruised past visiting Framingham State University, 112-64, in a non-conference contest in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 6-1.
  • Framingham State, 6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges' previous school record of 17 3-pointers had happened twice previously – on February 18, 2017 against Washington University, and again on December 8, 2019.
  • The Judges reached 17 trifectas by halftime by getting off to a torrid start. After missing their first attempt from beyond the arc, Brandeis connected on 10 in a row over the first 8:40 of the game.
  • Meanwhile, FSU couldn't get anything going, scoring just three free throws in that span as Brandeis led 38-3 less than half way into the first half.
  • The Judges would tie their record with their final 3-pointer of the half from sophomore Jasper Schindler (Braunschweig, Germany/Shanghai American School) with 1:26 on the clock. Brandeis would take a 67-21 lead into the locker room by finishing the stanza connecting on 17-of-24 3-pointers (70.8%) and 24-of-35 overall (68.6%).
  • Meanwhile FSU was just 70f-27 overall (25.9%) and 3-of-9 from deep (33.3%) in the first half.
  • Senior Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) and first-year Elias Rodl (Berlin, Germany/Schulund Leistungssportzentrum Berlin) had 16 and 14 points, respectively, as each had four 3-pointers in the first.
  • With their lead secure, the second half was more evenly played, with Brandeis edging Framingham State, 45-43. After the Judges missed their first three attempts from downtown, Harris connected with 15:10 remaining for the Judges' record-breaking 18th trifecta of the night.
  • Rodl would add two more 3-pointers in the stanza to finish with a team-high six, while sophomore Kyle Walters (Mableton, Ga./The Lovett School) connected on the 25th and final bomb with 3:06 remaining in the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Rodl led all players with a career-best 27 points, hitting 10-of-12 overall, 6-of-8 from deep and 1-of-3 from the line, in just 21 minutes of action. It was his second game of the season over 20 points.
  • Harris added 19 points in 18 minutes, hitting 7-of-10 overall, 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. This marked the first time this season he did not lead the Judges in scoring.
  • Walters established a career-high with 17 points on a perfect shooting night – 6-of-6 from the field, 4-of-4 from distance and 1-of-1 from the line.
  • Junior Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y./Woodstock Academy) finished with 15 points and first-year Ryan Weiss (Hewlett, N.Y./North Broward Prep)  added a career-high 10.
  • The Judges dominated boards as well, 39-25, with Edwards, Weiss and graduate student Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) each grabbing seven.
  • Grad student Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) posted a career-high 10 assists.
  • In all, nine of the 11 active players on the Brandeis roster hit at least one 3-pointer, paced by Rodl's 6 and Harris's 5.
  • The 25 3-pointers are tied for the highest total in NCAA Division III this season with the Judges' UAA rivals from New York University.
  • Brandeis ended the game shooting 58.5% overall (38-65) and 58.1% from deep (25-43), while Framingham State was 39.6% overall (21-53) and 41.7% from downtown (10-24).
  • FSU's Calvin Johnson led the visitors with 18 points off the bench, while Kyle Philistin had 11. No Ram player had more than three rebounds, while Adonis Vashon had three assists.
