#18 Carnegie Mellon Wins Decisively in First Game of Earlham Classic, 88-69

(RICHMOND, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon men's basketball, ranked 18th nationally, team traveled to Indiana for the first day of the Earlham Classic on Saturday. The Tartans defeated Earlham College 88-69, putting them at 4-1 overall for the season while Earlham is now 0-4.

How It Happened

  • Junior Buckley DeJardin scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer with 17 minutes left in the first half.
  • After jumper shots from senior Nolan Casey and layups from junior Justin Allen and graduate student R.J. Holmes, the Tartans lead 11-0.
  • The Quakers scored their first points of the game with 14 minutes remaining in the first half, after missing their first 11 shots. A layup and a three-pointer brought the score to 11-5.
  • DeJardin scored his second three-pointer of the game and two free throws, to bring the score to 16-5.
  • The Quakers went on an eight-point scoring streak, to reduce the Tartans' lead to three points with nine minutes to play in the half.
  • Over the last five minutes of the half, the Tartans used a 17-6 run to take a 39-23 lead into the locker room. During the stretch, DeJardin connected on another triple and senior Aidan Murphy drained two three-pointers.
  • Allen started off the scoring in the second half with a jumper shot, which was immediately matched by the Quakers.
  • The Tartans continued to increase their lead. DeJardin's fourth three-pointer of the game gave the Cardinal and Gray a 57-33 advantage with 15:58 remaining.
  • Two layups, a jumper shot, and a tip-in by Allen helped bring the Tartans to a 27-point lead with 10 minutes remaining, the largest for the Tartans in the game.
  • In the next three minutes, the Quakers reduced the Tartan's lead by 13 points at 71-57.
  • The Tartans responded and scored seven straight before going onto the 88-69 victory.

  • The Tartans ended the game shooting 42.7% (32-75) from the floor and 11-of-26 from behind the arc for 42.3%.
  • The Tartans held their lead the entire game.
  • DeJardin led the Tartans with a total of 24 points, tying a career high. He converted 7-of-16 from the floor, 6-of-12 from behind the arc, and 4-of-4 from the foul line. He also had seven rebounds. His six triples were also a career best.
  • Holmes and Allen both scored 19 points. Holmes shot 7-of-11 from the floor and Allen shot 8-of-16.
  • Casey finished the game with a career-high 13 rebounds and added six points. Holmes also grabbed double-digit rebounds with 12.
  • Allen led the team with three assists.

Quakers Stats

  • The Quakers ended the game shooting 31.5% (23-73) from the floor and 5-of-18 from behind the arc for 27.8%.
  • Ken Walker led the team with 21 points.
  • Tavian Tatum had eight points and a team high seven rebounds.

Notes

  • Holmes recorded his third double-double of the season, second straight, and now has 25 for his career.
  • Allen needs 45 points to become the 22nd Tartans to score 1,000 for their career.
  • Allen, DeJardin and Holmes have now scored in double figures in all five game this season.
