Goetz Guides Warriors To Conference-Opening Win At Benedictine

LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Graduate Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) tied a career high with 30 points and 15th-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College came away with an 83-75 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-opening win over Benedictine on Saturday at Dan and Ada Rice Center.

The Warriors (5-0, 1-0 NACC), who won their first game in Lisle since the 2008-2009 season, started conference play 1-0 for the seventh straight season.

WLC held the lead for nearly 14 minutes in a back-and-forth first half that featured five lead changes and four ties. The Eagles grabbed their first lead of the game at 16-15 with just under nine minutes left. Goetz gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 25-19 advantage, its largest lead of the half, over two minutes later following a three-point play. Graduate Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) converted another three-point play to maintain the six-point lead with just over three minutes remaining. BenU, which went 16-for-20 from the charity stripe in the opening half, closed on a 12-3 scoring run to take a 40-37 lead into halftime.

Benedictine held its largest advantage of the game of four points at 46-42 three minutes into the second half. Trailing 49-48 at the 15:25 mark, the Warriors rattled off a 10-0 scoring run, keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from graduates Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) and Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.). The Eagles brought their deficit down to three points at 58-55 with 11:14 remaining, but a three-pointer from Goetz pushed WLC's lead back to nine points with under nine minutes to play. BenU came within four points on four separate occasions within the final seven-and-a-half minutes, but Wisconsin Lutheran had a scoring answer each time. Another three-point play from Goetz gave the Warriors their third nine-point lead of the game at 77-68 with four minutes left. Consecutive steals from Stoltz on two of the last three Benedictine possessions clinched the NACC-opening win for WLC.

Goetz matched a career-high 30 points to go along with seven rebounds, leading three players in double figures for Wisconsin Lutheran. Broeckel finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots. Stoltz, who scored half his points from the charity stripe, added 20 points and a career-high six steals.
