Brandeis men keep offense rolling with 90-61 win over Regis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's team kept up its historic offensive streak, scoring 90 points for a fourth-straight game for the first time in more than three decades as the Judges defeated the visiting Regis College Pride, 90-61, in a non-conference game in Red Auerbach Arena today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jumping out to a fast start was vital for the Judges. The outscored Regis, 21-4 over the first 7:13 of the contest.
  • As the Brandeis offense got off to a 9-for-15 start from the field, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range, they held Regis to 2-for-10 with four turnovers over that stretch.
  • Soon the Judges found themselves with their largest lead of the half at 27 points when senior Gil Otoo (Burtonsville, Md./ St. Vincent Pallotti) hit a lay-up on an assist from grad student Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) that made it 42-15 with 6:15 left before the break.
  • Over the final stretch of the stanza, Regis played well, outscoring the Judges, 19-6, to close within 48-34 at the break. Aamyr Sullivan had eight points for the visitors in the stretch as Regis hit six of their last nine shots.
  • No one scored in the first minute of the second half before Regis's Jamir Harvey cut the lead to 12 with a hook shot.
  • Brandeis answered with the next two hoops from first-year Alex Zakheim (Bergenfield, N.J./Perkiomen) and Using to put the Judges back up by 16.
  • Even after Regis got back within 13, the Judges scored the next 10 points in a row, including 3-pointers from junior Jake Bender (Scituate, R.I./St. George's School) and first-year Elias Rodl (Berlin, Germany/Schulund Leistungssportzentrum Berlin). The last made it 64-41, Brandeis, with 14:03 to go.
  • Having reestablished a lead greater than 20 points, the Judges were able to empty the bench over the last five minutes.
  • Even with their reserves in the contest, the Judges were able to reach the 90-point plateau with their final bucket, a 3-pointer from junior Enrique Perez (Miami, Fla./Riviera Prep).
  • Not since the 1992-93 season has a Brandeis team scored more than 90 points in four straight games; the Judges had a streak of four in a row in which they scored more than 100 during that season.
  • No Brandeis team since 1973-74 has scored 90 in five straight contests.
  • Among their balanced attack, Brandeis saw three players score in double figures and another two reach nine points.
  • Returning to the top spot in the Judges' scoring column was senior Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy), who notched 15 points. Rodl added 13 points and Bender had 11. Zahkeim and Otoo had nine each.
  • In terms of all-around performances, Using stuffed the stat sheet for the Judges, with eight points, game-highs of eight rebounds and five assists, as well as two steals.
  • Pacing Regis was their leading scorer for the season, Russell Rau, who had 17 points and a  team-high five rebounds. Sullivan finished with 12 points, all of which came in the first half.  Tate Pike led the visitors with three assists.
