Have a Week, Reed Kemp!

Scots Guard Leads Maryville to 81-68 Victory Against Pfeiffer

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Reed Kemp completed a fantastic week of basketball on Saturday by scoring 29 points and grabbing nine rebounds to lead Maryville to an 81-68 win over Pfeiffer.

The Scots improved to 4-3 and claimed third place at the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament. Their narrow loss Friday night to Gettysburg looks even better now that the Bullets beat host and No. 23-ranked Hampden-Sydney 81-78 in Saturday's championship game.

"The guys bounced back against one of the best teams in the USA South," Maryville head coach Raul Placeres said. "There is still a lot of growth to be had, but I am always happy when we hold teams below 70 points.

"And what a week for Reed Kemp!"

Kemp did not have his best shooting game during live action, finishing 8-of-18 from the floor and 1-of-8 from long range. But he was a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line to climb to 90 percent for the week and 88.5 percent for the season.

The Franklin senior in three games this week averaged 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from 3-point distance. At the free throw line, Kemp made 27 of his 30 attempts.

His scoring average for the season is up to 24.4, or nearly seven points ahead of his closest competitor in the Collegiate Conference of the South. Nationally, he is inside the top 25 and climbing.

Second-Half Surge by Scots
After Maryville led 41-36 at intermission, Pfeiffer opened the second half on an 8-2 run to sneak in front 44-43. It was 48-all with 13:40 remaining when the Scots found their gear, outscoring the Falcons 29-10 over the next 10 minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 77-58 with 3:54 to play.

Chase Morgan finished the game with 15 points, Jackson Garner 14 and Javi Rosell a season-high 10. It was the first time this season Maryville placed four scorers in double-figures.

Maryville's 23-of-27 performance at the free-throw line was the season best, and the Scots won the rebound category for the first time 40-30.

"Glad to see a fourth double-figure scorer emerge today in Javi Rosell," Placeres said. "Now it's on to Berea on Tuesday for another challenge."

Maryville improved to 4-0 all-time against Pfeiffer (2-3). The Scots play again Tuesday night at Berea, which is off to a strong start at 3-1 after Saturday's 80-77 win at Millikin. Tipoff is 7 o'clock.
